Adding positive and negative: The result depends on which movement is larger. If you go up more floors than you go down, you end up above ground. If you go down more, you end up below ground. On the number line, the result is closer to the starting point of the larger movement.

Sum of a number and its inverse is zero: Going up some floors and then going down the same number of floors brings you back to ground floor (Floor 0). On the number line, moving right and then moving left the same distance returns to the starting point.
